Ricoh GXR Interchangeable Unit Digital Camera System Review

Ricoh GXR: Compact camera with interchangeable modules

Ricoh GXR is a compact camera with “Lego principle”; user of the GXR cannot change the objective but the module.

Ricoh currently offers two modules; each put a lens and an image sensor for Ricoh GXR. The receiving module S10 consists of a 24-to-72-millimeter lens and a 1 / 1, 7-inch CDD sensor with a resolution of 10 MP. In contrast, the module A12 via a lens with a fixed focal length of 50 millimeters and a CMOS chip with a resolution of 12.3 megapixels. With a size of 23.6 x 15.7 centimeters, it corresponds to the APS-C image sensors used in cameras are used. For this year, Ricoh announced a third recording module with a telephoto lens.

Both modules are not adequate for snapshots, as their autofocus takes a long time until it found the subject. It tried only through the entire focal range, rather than directly to find the right focus. After all, the S10 engine moves the lens quickly three times through its zoom range.

Ricoh GXR provides the user with three user settings. In addition, the camera offers a manual mode and shutter priority, aperture, program and full auto as well as six scene modes, including the video recording counts. Tools such as image stabilization and face recognition are not available.

On the back of the GXR-housing there is a 3-inch display screen that serves as a viewfinder as well for image reproduction. With a resolution of 920,000 pixels, it offers a pleasantly detailed and sharp picture. The light is strong enough to be seen clearly even under direct sunlight.

The "Adj" button allows user to quickly change important picture settings like white balance, light sensitivity or the resolution and file format. The mode dial is easy to rotate when the user presses the locking pin.

Ricoh GXR: Image quality

The image quality of Ricoh GXR depends on the used recording module. The CMOS sensor of the A12 module provides together with the fixed focus lens shots on SLR level, while not even a quarter as large CCD sensor of the S10 module only moved slightly above the average quality of compact cameras.

While the recording module A12 records videos in HD resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, S10 module maximum VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. Both provide convincing automatic wide with white balance. Unfortunately the image stabilizer is not available. The image quality of the videos is on par with a mid-range video camera on the same resolution.

The rubberized battery cover provides enough open space to the camera securely and firmly in control. The power of the camera takes a lithium-ion battery as a storage medium SD and SDHC cards are used. About an accessory shoe, the user can connect to other a flash or an electronic viewfinder. For data transfer, the GXR has three interfaces: An HDMI and a mini-USB port available for an Av output.

Conclusion

Ricoh comes with very convincing system camera concept via the GXR. The operation and the exchange of the modules are as simple as in the compact Micro Four Thirds cameras. The image quality depends strongly on the used module and its image sensor. The S10 engine delivers images at a higher-level compact camera, the A12 module moves the other hand, in the range of SLR cameras.
