Pentax Q Preview

The rumor circulated quite a while, now its official: Pentax brings Pentax Q camera with its own bayonet system on the market. The digital camera will be available on September.

This digital camera comes with small dimensions: approximately 9.8 x 5.6 x 3.1 cm, it is advertised as "Cigarette Size". Pentax Q comes with magnesium-aluminum housing, an it is the smallest camera with interchangeable lenses so far. This includes a low weight of only 200 grams with battery,

The image sensor is a "backside illuminated" CMOS. This means that the conductive connections, which were in the conventional sensors on the surface and the incident light is kept away from the sensor part, were placed on the back - so the sensor was installed virtually reversed. This increases the light-sensitive surface, which shortens the exposure times, thus reducing the noise susceptibility of the photos. With 12.4 megapixels, the resolution is rather moderate. The images are stored in JPWG or RAW (DNG). You may be curious how the sensor size effect in tests on image quality with only 1 / 2, not 33 inches, the sensor is larger than the average compact camera. The system is in the class SLR camera and rather unusual. But without this measure, the small size of the Pentax Q would not have been possible.

A disadvantage is the smaller sensors compared to APS-C and full frame cameras, a smaller depth of field. The open points, so let the blurring of the focus areas (bokeh effect) is therefore difficult. This compensates for the Pentax Q with an electronic post-processing, the "bokeh Control" that allows the photographer to determine the degree of background blur. This may not be for photo art purists, but we wait to see what the tests say so.

The LCD monitor offers a resolution of 3-inch 460,000 pixels. There is no optical viewfinder only option for plugging.

Pentax Q is equipped with the sensor cleaning. Since the sensor is movable, it is obvious that here also to accommodate the image stabilization. A flash and a HDR-automatic are also on board. Even a full-HD video mode may not be missing. This takes at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and 30 frames / second and stores it in the H.264 format.
