How to make a still life?

Still life seems at first glance quite simple: it is to photograph an object without any movement - in fact very doable, you'd think.

The reality, as is so often different: If you just photographed only a vase on the table, she sits far from the scene. Only nuances such as decorative objects, the right light and the right perspective on a still life set the icing on the cake. A professional studio environment, it is desirable but not essential: In a pinch, it also does a small room you can darken as needed. A window is a big advantage, because even the most expensive headlights can not mimic perfectly the light of day.

A tripod is an absolute must for contrast - otherwise you run the risk at slow shutter speeds to blur the picture. The next step you need a table with a clinically-white background. A large paperboard just is totally out of control. Also webs have proven themselves. By replacing the background (for example, by cardboard in a different color) you can still give your life later in the post in no time a very different effect. Another advantage of the flexibility of the material is cardboard: A light separately, with adhesive strips fixed dome in the background sets specific details of the photographed object in scene. The cardboard should be relatively thin and transparent - that is the basic light, which should be good enough for most still life.

The other tool that you must pay dearly in a photo studio can be completed with everyday objects: Take pictures, for example a wine glass still life appear, the outlines of a bright background, usually spongy. The solution: Left and right of the object, position two shading, for example in the form of a large black book. A silver platter or other reflective object acts as a reflector, finally. An object that is perpendicular to the camera can thus be illuminated from one side to the primary light source and the other by their reflections on the respective reflector.
