Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Test

The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a zoom with above-average high zoom range. The term Mega Zoom fits but not quite, if the competition from Sigma (18-250 mm) and Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF in mind. However, Canon is cheaper than its competitors. In the performance of the lens, according to a test similar to Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. A serious competitor would be Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 AF DC OS HSM, the less recorded.

The bayonet is made of metal, but no seals. The rubberized zoom ring is very easy to operate. Otherwise they fall quickly to narrow, this was described in the tests but as a pleasantly broad exception - even if the ring is slightly too steep and too smooth. The lack of an ultrasonic motor is the auto focus a bit noisy and the focus ring rotates with it - this can interfere with adherence. After all, the engine is relatively quiet and reliable AF. The front lens, and thus also an optional filter, is silent. The scattered light of the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS was 3,5-5,6 / 18-135 IS described in the test as very good, but as usual missing the Canon lens is a lens hood - which are at Canon first in the professional series with the "L" here. Also a very good test, according to working, silent image stabilizer on board to recognize the "IS" in its name. In turns he is a slide switch.

The lens Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS test shows a relatively constant resolution with a small tele waste. Relatively - because with a comfortable zoom always have to make compromises. Even with the lens aperture in the test showed decent performance. Best of all was the resolution if the lens is dimmed by one step.
The distortion was at 18 mm thick and 135 mm barrel, there was a distortion in the other direction.
