Ricoh CX5: Compact Digicam with Power Zoom and CMOS Image Sensor

Tiny cameras with high magnification lens's are a dime a dozen - in February and March alone, 19 new Super Zoomer been added. To have a chance here, you have to stand out with special features from the crowd. Ricoh CX5 tried this with a hybrid auto focus: In addition to the contrast AF, the digital camera determines the distance to the subject area with a sensor that sits next to the lens on the front. Whether that works and is sufficient to prevail upon the competition, the review suggests.

Just two years ago, there has to be related to the Ricoh CX1 its first compact super zoom camera on the market. With 7.1-times zoom lens, 9.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 2.8-centimeter thick casing. Meanwhile, the CX5 is already on the shelves, also with a CMOS sensor with 10 megapixels of resolution in adult and 10.7-fold zoom.

On the top of the camera in the right third sitting on / off switch and shutter release, including zoom ring. On the far right on the edge is the mode selector switch. It is recessed slightly recessed into the case and can easily rotate with the thumb.

On the back of the camera, this is the fifth generation of the same 920,000 pixels resolution and 3.0-inch display. The CX5 convinced us again with the razor-sharp display. The right of the display is a rubberized thumb rest. It points to the right on a light shield and prevents the photographer the right top-mounted joystick accidentally pressed.

On the bottom right of the camera sits a door, behind which are concealed compartments for the battery and memory card. In addition, Ricoh brings to the tripod thread, which unfortunately is not made of plastic and metal. Those who like to express my turn to the tripod screw is, sooner or later ruin the thread. On the right side there is a small plastic cap, which houses under the Ricoh HDMI output and a combined AV and proprietary USB port. Unfortunately, the correct closing of the cap is always associated with some tweaking. Otherwise, feel the housing to very high quality - almost as if one could build houses out of the camera. The camera is available in black, silver and pink.

Like its predecessor, the Ricoh CX5 uses a 1 / 2, 3 inch CMOS sensor. The advantage over competing CCD technology is primarily the speed. However, we are of the CX5 here now somewhat disappointed. There is no pivot about Ricoh panorama mode, not Full-HD video capabilities, not ten sequential shots per second and no 3D features.

Nevertheless, in contrast to most CCD cameras, the CX5 is still afloat on the road. The burst speed is at full 10 megapixel resolution five photos per second - up to 15 shots and 3.0 seconds. Anyone with 2-megapixel (1728 times 1296 pixels) are satisfied begin until a to 26 photos in 0.9 seconds. It's even quicker with 640 x 480 pixels - and then the digital camera shoots 120 frames per second. Ricoh combines all the features under high-speed serial point selection mode on the mode dial.

Directly below you will find the creative recording mode. It offers six different visual effects. Dynamic range combined two photos to a host with increased dynamic range. Miniaturize draws the upper and lower area of soft and can thereby acting motifs taken from the top tiny. Then there is a black and white mode, a cross-development effect and a fun-effects camera filter that the shots missed an effect as if it had been shot with a toy camera. The Blur finally lets the images - as the name suggests - look very soft.

Given the very high quality functional and simple design, it surprised us somewhat that the Ricoh CX5 brings no manual adjustments. The greatest scope for creativity provides the (program) Automatic - marked on the mode dial with a green camera. Here photographers have the opportunity to parameters such as white balance, ISO sensitivity and more. For the panel, there is no adjustment possibility for the exposure time is very limited: in the long-time mode can set to 1, 2, 4 or 8 seconds.

Fans of scene programs can look forward to 19 different modes. In addition to standards such as portrait, sports and fireworks, there are also a feature called multi-night landscape image that combines a series of pictures with high shutter speeds with each other to avoid camera shake and produce a recording with better picture quality. The function of automatic scene modes on the mode wheel finally chooses the subject from the scene most appropriate program.

The HD movie mode captures a 1280 x 720 pixels and offers a continuous autofocus. Unfortunately, the optical zoom while recording. Given the rather loud noise, the lens is indeed non-surprise. But still it would have been nice to have this opportunity.

Finally, there are on the mode selector switch with two My1 and My2 labeled points, among which can save the CX5 have their own set of acquisition parameters for common motifs snapped.

A very nice feature that you no longer want to miss once you get used to it, the spirit level. This saves it to a rule; straighten photos later on the computer to laboriously. The function is available both in portrait and in landscape format. The Ricoh CX5 shoots not only bracketing, but also white balance, color effects, and even focus series.
