LX5: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Review

LX5: What’s new?

LX5 is the successor of the LX3, at fist glance Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 has a tactile aesthetic appearance. The casing made from metal, it made the Lumix is even more luxurious. Even the camera looks pretty large for a compact camera; it still fits very well on pocket.

Panasonic done a very well job on LX5’s housing; including the dial mode that allows quick adjustment to the desired mode. Like at a D-SLR camera; photographer can adjust quickly to important parameters, such as the F number in the mode "A" (Aperture). And even more: The thumb wheel is clickable, one pressure on it, and it switches to a different function, for example to adjust the exposure compensation - that's really clever!

On the back of the Panasonic LX5 there are a number of buttons. Thanks to the many buttons so that operation is fast with the camera. The "Quick Menu" button available on the display, so the camera configuration is easy.

The main menu of the LX5 is a bit confusing, due to the very many options. The display coincides with a diagonal measurement of 3-inches; the resolution is about 460,000 pixels. Nevertheless, the controls monitor showing a clear, high contrast image.

Too bad that the display is mounted rigidly and neither work nor can swing. The tripod thread of the LX5 is sitting next to the outside. This is a disadvantage for panoramic images because the camera does not fit in the optical axis on a tripod. On the other hand, the tripod socket is so far from the battery and memory card compartment, so that it can be easily opened.

LX5: Features and Performace

Less ambitious photographer is pleased that the LX5 offers many scene modes. Manual setting is also possible on this camera. It also offers a macro mode.

The LX5 records 720p videos and stored as a motion JPEG or AVHCD formats. The sound only comes in mono. However, the image stabilizer assures high quality video results.

The coordination between the optics and sensor has succeeded; the artifact rate is kept within tolerable limits. It is recommended to record in RAW format. The autofocus is pretty fast. For moving objects, the AF has not always proved reliable.

Conclusion

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 is a high quality compact camera that is preparing a real joy. The compact camera is recommended as a permanent companion for all occasions.
