Pentax K-r Review

Pentax K-r: How good is it?

Pentax K-r D-SLR becomes very popular among beginners and intermediates because of its attractive features such as 3-inches display screen, 12 MP CMOS sensor with ISO 100-25600, image stabilizer and the low of noise.

Pentax K-r: Housing and Design

The K-r doesn’t offer the highest quality housing and design, but it fits in hand comfortably. The rubber ensures a secure handling. The SD?SDHC memory card located on the right side of the camera, while a combined USB / AV port located on the left. The metal tripod mount is well located in the optical axis.

According to CIPA standard measurement method, the battery lasts for 470 shoots. Alkaline batteries, NiMH rechargeable batteries or lithium batteries are work well with Pentax K-r.

The 3-inch LCD screen dissolves 921,000 dots of resolution. Brightness can be adjusted
UI on the K-r is very simple, so that most users won’t even need to read the manual book for basic functions. The confusing vertical scrolling menus are not available on this D-SLR camera; instead the clear and very easy to understand horizontal menu.

Features and Image Quality

Whether beginner or an ambitious photographer – Pentax K-r has much to offer for both groups. The Mode Dial has common scene modes and an automatic transmission that selects the scene mode automatically. In addition, the classical program, aperture and aperture priority as well as a manual mode including Bulb-time exposure are available. The Sv mode is used to specify the ISO sensitivity with the thumbwheel. The aperture and shutter speed can be set and the camera will automatically adjust the sensitivity. The focus in the lens is moved mechanically through a clutch and shaft, which unfortunately comes with a noise CARRIED.

Advanced photographers will miss the preview button and mirror lockup. The 2-second self-timer is available. When the self timer is activated, the integrated image stabilizer is disabled automatically, which is actually quite practical. By movably mounted and magnetically controlled sensor each image stabilized lens is scheduled, this is very useful.

Pentax K-r missing an external microphone port, the focus can not be tracked automatically and the resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels (or VGA) limited at 25 fps. At least, the aperture in the video mode can be set manually.

Pentax

Other important features are found in Pentax Kr, such as the auto exposure bracketing up to + / -3 EV exposure difference of the three individual exposures or ability to save pictures in RAW. The format can be set between DNG and PEF, the simultaneous recording of RAW and JPEG is possible. In sequence mode, there are two speed settings. Lens distortion or chromatic aberration can be corrected automatically. In addition, there are many other useful and gimmick functions.

A gimmick feature that is only found in Pentax camera is the infrared port. Not only allows to send or receive pictures to other Pnetax camera, but you can compete against each other, who made a better photo. The camera evaluates the photos automatically according to different criteria.

The image quality on the Kr is very convincing, especially at high ISO sensitivities. The Kr is very convincing in almost every conditions.

The resolution of the Setzooms is quite respectable, especially as concerns the uniformity of the image center to edge. In the wide angle there is a 2.4% barrel distortion at medium and long focal length.

At the noise up to ISO 3200 the Kr shows outstanding values, then the noise curve makes a jump upwards at ISO 6400 and 12800. At 25 600 the curve is significantly high so that the highest sensitivity should be used only if necessary. All sensitivity occurs with no annoying color noise. The good image quality is also reflected in the input dynamic range, which reaches at ISO 100 with 8.5 stops. Even up to ISO 3200 the dynamics of 7.9 is still in good range. The output dynamics shows a slightly higher black level, which is still tolerable.

Pentax K-r also shows the very neutral picture processing. Over a large area it is drawn with a ruler, the lights are minimal, the soft shadows a little more clearly.

The compression of JPEG images is well balanced. However, the highest compression should be avoided, significant loss of detail and identify artifacts occur on the highest compression.

Conclusion

Despite its unconvincing housing, the K-r D-SLR provides many things for both beginner and intermediate photographer. Simple in operation and convincing image quality are just enough reasons to buy this K-r.
