Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Review

Canon EOS Rebel T3i: the new legend is born

Canon EOS Rebel T3i, as a great-great-great-great-granddaughter of the legendary EOS 300D doesn’t have much common with its ancestor. Instead, it comes in more advanced fields. The folding and swivel screen, full HD video functions or the rich 18 megapixel resolution, one can even find two classes higher in the EOS 7D.

At the bottom of the case a metal tripod mount in the optical axis. The Li-ion energy booster on Canon EOS Rebel T3i is enough for only 440 shots according to CIPA standard measurement, which is not much for a DSLR. The memory card slot on the right side of the case allows constant access to the SD, SDHC or SDXC card, but can miss a spring, which can be opened automatically after the door is unlocked.

The EOS Rebel T3i offers everything for the amateur photographer and videographer in everyday needs. The 7.5 inch screen diagonal also folding and turning, which emulates Canon becomes a direct competitor to the D5100.

Almost all important features of Canon EOS Rebel T3i can be operated through touch screen. Button and the wheel is so close together that they are better served consecutively, rather than parallel to change the setting while pressing the button, which works as well with the exposure setting.

The video mode on Canon EOS Rebel T3i certainly comes up with some settings. They achieved at 24 or 25 frames per second full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and 50 fps for HD 1,280 x 720 pixels. The internal mono microphone on the other hand is not convincing, especially since it receives each control noise at the camera. Fortunately, Canon has thought of the stereo microphone port.

The 18-55mm IS II offers perfectly good image sharpness, at least if we limit the claims to 20 by 30 inches large prints. Here occur at any aperture of F3, 5 to F22 and no focal length restrictions that could be seen with the naked eye. The over all focal lengths and to the edges towards the highest resolution is achieved at aperture F8, it shows with the exception of the telephoto already resolution losses due to diffraction. In the wide-angle almost 55 line pairs per millimeter can be achieved at the edge of respectable 44th Less convincing is the tendency to chromatic aberrations that occur at all apertures and focal lengths more or less visible.

The signal to noise ratio at ISO 100 and 200 very well, is up to ISO 800 on a good level, but then falls off more steeply. Color noise plays a role until 6400 and has not previously visible. The graininess of the noise is relatively low; the exception is the red channel, which has a significant eruption at ISO 800 upwards. The luminance noise is also up, including ISO 3200 is quite small, but then increases significantly. Overall, Canon EOS Rebel T3i at ISO 3200 performs quite well, but always better to prefer the lowest possible sensitivity for clearer pictures.

In color reproduction, Canon EOS Rebel T3i is very inconsistent. In particular, the choice of the ISO level has significant impact on how the colors will actually meet again. Especially in the red and magenta area reveals this dependence. While green, yellow and sometimes blue tones are very neutral, where again, there are orange, red and magenta areas clearer color shifts. The color contrast, takes considerably from ISO 100 to 12,800 so that Canon Rebel T3i is differentiated at higher sensitivities fewer colors. Up to ISO 400 it is good at ISO 800 average, about there are already severe restrictions when only 18 to 20 bit are resolved.

Conclusion

Canon EOS Rebel T3i is convincing in image quality. The operation is Canon's typical well designed but sometimes slightly unconventional. Above all, the good image quality with high resolution and low noise makes sure that purchasing the EOS Rebel T3i does not commit considerable mistake.
