Casio Exilim EX-ZR100: How good is it?

Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 equipped with a large focal length range and several uncommon features for a compact camera such as captures slow motion video at 1000 frames per second and 1080p video recording with stereo sound.

The 12.1 MP CMOS sensor comes with 12.5x optical zoom which is pretty high for a compact camera at this class. The focal length ranges from 24 to 300 mm. A mechanical image stabilizer assures hand-shake free images. The autofocus is fast and helps to produces sharp image results.

Numerous scene modes are available, user may choose from 32 preset scene modes or their own modes. The panorama mode assist user to shots a good panorama photo. Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 takes several photos with different exposure and puts them together into one image.

User also may use a diaphragm and a shutter-priority. The manual recording program only offers control of the aperture and shutter speed, which only two aperture sizes available to choose.
The 3-inch display screen scren on the back of Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 serves as a viewfinder and playback of recordings. It comes with resolution of 460,800 pixels. It displays high details of subject and clear even in direct sunlight.

The Exilim EX-ZR100 can be operated by one hand. While the left hand only needs to activate the sequence mode with the special button on the top of the camera.

In the main menu of Exilim EX-ZR100, user gets its own "Menu" button. It is divided into three sub-menus for recording, quality and basic settings.

The image quality is very convincing with high level of detail and clear outlines. The colors are natural and good in contrast.

Low noise can be found at original size of ISO 200. Up to ISO 800 the images are only suitable when it reduced to one fourth of its original size. The noise is starts annoying from ISO 1600, while ISO 3200 is not recommended.

The Exilim EX-ZR100 records 1080p at 40 fps with stereo sound. The auto focus works great and fast during this recording mode. The results come with high detail and natural-looking colors. The microphones provide a well-understand tone.

In slow motion video, Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 takes up to 1,000 images per second. However, the slow motion videos are much smaller than the normal full-HD videos.
For example; at 240 fps the image only comes in 432 x 320 pixels, while at 1,000 fps the size is only 224 x 64 pixels.

The Exilim EX-ZR100 comes with well-processed plastic housing. The lithium-ion battery powering the compact camera and files are stored in SD, SDHC or SDXC card. USB port, and a combined USB / AV port are available for data transfer.

Conclusion

Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 provides impressive image quality and many features, although the features are not mature yet. Based on its price and performance; the EX-ZR100 is recommended.
