Nikon D5100 stores its files as well as any other digital SLR camera on a memory card.

Sometimes you have a disk formatted. In one format, all existing data may be deleted and the file system of the card set, when she would come straight out of the box. Such a procedure is recommended for example for emptying a memory card from no longer necessary files: Formatting is in such a case, much faster than the individual deletion of each individual file on the control panel view. Also, you should format your memory card if it previously in another digital camera - have used - especially one that does not come from the House of Nikon.

Nikon D5100 does the formatting of the memory card as follows:

  1. Turn Nikon D5100 on with the ON / OFF switch is in operation.
  2. Press the MENU button and select the upper and lower control pad button and select "Format Memory Card" in the menu "Setup ".
  3. Now mark similar to Step 2, select "Yes" and click "OK ".
  4. You will see a warning message that you confirm again with "OK ". It will begin the formatting process that can take depending on storage capacity of the card installed a certain time. Meanwhile, the Nikon D5100 may not be turned off. Also you should not try and remove the memory card or to access other menus.

Please note that the formatting will be lost forever, all on the memory card stored data. If you want to keep individual photos or videos, you should first back up via a USB connection on your computer.
