Nikon COOLPIX P500 Review

Nikon COOLPIX P500: Monster Zoom

Nikon COOLPIX P500 comes with 36x zoom lens; even the peak of mountain seems very close with the zoom. Full HD resolution video recording and slow motion feature are also available on this new digital camera from Nikon.

The super zoom cameras popularity is growing in the recent years. With an SLR you have to carry around a few pounds heavy camera, meanwhile the P500 offers about the same zoom and lighter body. In addition, Nikon has added a further special feature: the initial focal length is already at 22.5 millimeters.

Nikon COOLPIX P500: How good is it?

The P500 definitely feels like an SLR camera. This is partly due to its electronic viewfinder. Of course, the P500 can not compete in image quality with an expensive D-SLR. It is remains a compact camera.

From ISO 400 traces of noise in the image are remarkable. With a zoom at this strength, an image stabilizer is a must. Both full automatic and manual setting are possible, so that even a beginner won’t find any difficulties. The scene mode offers popular attitudes to the animal portrait. Frequently used scenes such as backlight or Night Portrait are directly accessible via the dial.

The screen on the back panel comes in VGA resolution. You can fold it up and down – but it can’t be turned. The camera records full-HD 1080p video at 30 fps and stereo sound. The video results are clear and sharp. Connection to the TV is possible via HDMI output. In slow-motion mode, Nikon COOLPIX P500 shoots 240 fps in lower resolution.
