Olympus PEN E-PL2 Review

Olympus E-PL2, is successor to the Olympus PEN E-P1. It is available in more colorful design than its predecessor.

The Olympus E-PL2 is better than its predecessor in handling and body kit. The dimensions of the aluminum case are almost the same, the kit lens M-Zuiko Digital f/3.5-5.6 14-42 mm II is slimmer. The 3-inch monitor is convincing, thanks to above-average 460,000 pixels resolution. Its aspect ratio is 3:2, which means that videos will now appear larger

The service offers - as befits a camera system is one - something for everyone, manual controls for advanced and several automatic modes for those who prefer to focus on the subject than on the camera functions.

The maximum ISO sensitivity is ISO 6400, can be recorded in RAW or JPEG. An image stabilizer is integrated in the housing. This has the advantage that is saved in costs, for lenses without a stabilizer are cheaper than those with.

In the tests was the Olympus E-PL2 present a good to excellent image quality. Up to ISO 400 the images were sharp, detailed and noise free. From ISO 400 of very strong noise filter has become visible. This is only in the factory setting is set and can be modified. After all: the tests were located largely in agreement that the images were acceptable up to ISO 1600th While it is still to be lived up to ISO 6400, but there must with strong restrictions in image quality. The noise reduction features the soft images, and flips on the details - but that's nagging at high levels. The dynamics were described as good.

The ability to HD video recording is now well standard in this class of camera. The Olympus E-PL2 offers an HD resolution of 1280x720 pixels with 30 frames per second that are recorded in the M-JPEG format. Also, a connector for a stereo microphone is present, so that the built-in mono microphone can be added. Appreciated was the precise-tracking autofocus in video mode with the kit lens.

Worth mentioning are the Artistic filters, here called "Type II filter" that can be applied not only to the photos but also videos, and indeed even today. New to the list of filters "Dramatic Sound" is, in addition, three of the filters can now be adjusted in thickness. These can be in RAW mode also applies to photos taken in retrospect. A RAW converter is integrated way. For advanced students: external flashes can be controlled wirelessly. The built-in flash is rather weak. A plus point of the camera system is the sensor cleaning.

On average, the Olympus E-PL2 needed in view of the test measurements in about 0.5 seconds to trip. At twilight, the trip extended as expected to approximately 0.66 seconds. Series provides the system camera with about 3 frames per second.

Despite many people think that Olympus E-PL2 is no more than a small improvement from Olympus PEN E-P1 our test result shows that this is the best micro four thirds cameras 2011 so far.
