Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS Digital Camera Review

Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS: Solid compact camera

Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS feels solid and robust in hand. It comes with the dimensions of 6.4 x 5.6 x 2.2 inches and 15.2 ounces; as small as your credit card, very portable and mobile as well.

The one-hand operation is possible because of the size, but you should be careful lest they slip away since no rubber on it.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS: What’s in it?

On the top you will find a slider, which allows you to switch between the standard smart auto mode and program mode. The former recognizes the scene and compares the images with 32 on-board options. The Func. / Set button allows user gets manual settings. In the default Auto mode you will only set the self-timer, the aspect ratio and image quality.

There are three options for metering, evaluative metering, center and spot emphasis, eleven different settings for My Colors, white balance, ISO sensitivity, single-shot and continuous shooting. There are also digital effects such as a fish eye toy camera or a faded poster effect. A good addition is the underwater photography. Optionally, user can buy a waterproof case and use the appropriate functions. Even rarer in the field of compact cameras is the slow-motion movie mode. In the test, it was able to play videos with an eighth of the actual speed and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Substituting the number to 640 by 480 pixels high, the video runs at a quarter of the speed. This is very good for a compact camera. Especially when you consider that it is not really expensive.

The control pad on the back of Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS is unfortunately a bit small. It lacks a bit of comfort and you have to look very carefully if you want to use it. So it remains only a means to adjust the exposure compensation, flash and display settings, and adjusting focus between infinity and macro.

The on / off switch is located on the top of the housing. It takes just over one second until the compact camera switching service. Not bad for a digital camera of this class. The instant viewing, the manufacturer has solved well, it presses the shutter button halfway, the recorded material is directly shown. One more pressure and you are back in the recording mode. User has no cumbersome way to go than to switch between modes. The camera has no dial to change about the style of the photos or videos. Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS had to stand still until the menu to select the desired effect. This is slightly awkward; a dial could have fit on the small case. The AF function is not the fastest, but the speed is sufficient. A JPEG to store the highest resolution takes about three seconds.

The images of Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS are satisfactory. Sure, it has like almost any digital camera with their problems fringing. Especially when present in an image contrasts are too much. In the wide angle there is an average of field and even at maximum telephoto setting was seen always nice razor sharp detail. As for exposure, autofocus, ISO settings and quality, it is not inherently better than its predecessor. But we must also remember that it does not fail much more expensive and have to find an acceptable balance of manufacturers in order to reach as many buyers. The light sensitivity can be set up to ISO 3200. The best results are obtained up to ISO 400; when no noise occurs, the images are always softer. The details are inaccurate. But all in all a good performance for a cheap compact camera.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS: Conclusion

As a small, compact and stylish camera, Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS is hard to replace. It is easy to operate and rich of features.

If bigger size and more expensive price are no matter then better go for the ELPH 300 HS or ELPH 500 HS for better performance and image quality.
