Eye-Fi Mobile X2: Images from the camera directly into the smartphone

The camera of the iPhone has indeed its weaknesses, it has one great advantage: the owner of the Apple smartphone can their images instantly share with the whole world, at least as long as they have UMTS reception and pay the data transfer can (which is abroad, unfortunately, still a problem). Some digital camera manufacturers have therefore begun to equip their models with Wi-Fi at least. Properly enforced, this has never - who does not care for it, may not pay the surcharge.

With and without detour
For quite some time since the Eye-Fi card is an interesting alternative. I have years ago when they first it was only in the U.S., ever have to send a copy - has done a lot since then. A year ago I have already introduced the Eye-Fi X2 models, there is now with the Eye-Fi Mobile X2 is an interesting update. From the outside, the Eye-Fi cards from ordinary SD memory cards can not be distinguished. It is also important so that they fit into any camera really, the regular SD cards swallows. Their big advantage is the built-in WiFi module that connects each camera to the network.

The effort must first configure what the vendor provides both Windows and Mac versions of its control program. The process is pretty simple, basically everything happens by itself In the simplest case, which was already the very first Eye-Fi card, then move the images via wireless from the camera to the computer. While this saves a cable, but is not yet so useful. Interestingly there is already a direct upload to the Web: It is the map on a computer on a particular wireless network, and then the detour via the computer and the images and videos delivered directly to Flickr, Picasa, Facebook or YouTube.

The cards can photos and videos directly to iPhone or upload Android smartphones and tablets. The necessary apps are free. The trick is simple: The card generates while it is still in the camera, its own Wi-Fi, through which it communicates with the mobile phone or tablet.

If you switch the mode of "infinite memory" one, even on the card fits, that is not about them: If there is only little space, it deletes the images that are already transferred and secured. However, this did not work just nice feature in the test. Neither Sony nor one in a Kodak camera was the Eye-Fi card, the WLAN required span, even though everything was configured correctly and found the latest software version used. I just hope that there was an error on the test device - then there is an upgrade soon.

If it works for, the direct mode via Mobile technology is an interesting combination is that the characteristics of a good photograph "real" camera combine with the online capabilities of tablet and smartphone. Apple users solve their problem so similar, how they should connect with their camera phone and tablet.
