Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera Review

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS will commercially available in October 2011, it is the successor to the SX30 IS. The suffix "IS" (Image Stabilizer), falls away and is replaced by "HS" (High Sensitivity). Do not worry; an optical stabilizer is still there, only now it is no longer viewed as a worthy feature. Canon's new HS-sensors, however, is revolutionary enough.

The Canon SX40 is not a digital camera to fits in your pocket. With its small dimensions a reflex zoom lens attached. The display of the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS was unfortunately not upgraded. As before, here are offered with a 2.7-inch resolution of 230,000 pixels. After all, the screen is swiveled back, which is very comfortable in difficult situations. The viewfinder is on board; this is not optically, but electronically and has a resolution 202 000 pixels.

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS: for beginners and advanced

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS provides both an intelligent and even selectable automatic tips, on the other hand also offers the full range of manual settings, so half-automatics and a fully manual mode are available as well as 32 scene modes.

The Canon SX40 HS is given by a nice fast wide angle to extreme telephoto in the back all along the way: 24 to 840 mm, so the Canon bridge digital camera one of the "most comprehensive" in the market. Comparable to market competitors are appearing only the Nikon Coolpix P500 and the Olympus SP-810 UZ. The light intensity is f2, f5 to 7, 8 very well. The big zoom is moved through an ultrasound and voice-coil motor. This should quickly and quietly do immediately. An optical image stabilizer is - as already mentioned - again with it, which will prolong the exposure time by up to 4.5 levels. Seven modes, the stabilizer - and it also select the suitable automatically. Pans and stabilized only in the vertical.

To "HS" which describes Canon's backside illumination sensors that can handle very well with moderate light conditions. Unlike its predecessor with a 14 MP CCD is in Canon PowerShot SX40 HS has a rear illuminated CMOS sensor with only 12 megapixels. These are changes have significant impact on image quality. CMOS sensors have been in recent years, almost only used in SLR and now spill over into the consumer space. It is therefore hoped that work will be received by the data processing know-how from the DSLR range in the smaller classes.

Second sensor "Backside Illuminated" means that the connection lines lie between pixels is no longer between the incident light and the light-sensitive pixels, but were moved to the back - or else around: the sensor is exposed rear. This increases the light-sensitive surface, which reduces the exposure time. The shorter the exposure time, the better the image quality, because the longer the exposure, the higher the risk of noisy images.

Third, the megapixel count was reduced from 14 to 12. This means that the pixels have more space, which experience shows also the image quality benefit. Do not worry: with 12 megapixels you can still make large prints posters.
The processor has been redesigned. In the digital camera lies the new DIGIC 5. This should come mainly in speed benefit: faster data processing, rapid series, complex internal processing of the images.

Due to the fast processor the video recording mode is upgraded to the full HD video mode. Sound is recorded in stereo. The optical zoom is fully available, the autofocus works well here. At reduced resolution (VGA), slow motion shots of 120 and 240 frames / sec are possible. Like its predecessor, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS has a separate video-start button.

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS: Full of Features

The digital camera covers ISO up to ISO 3200; shooting in low light will still be a problem. Thanks to the faster processor, the camera can shoot several differently exposed images quickly behind each other and add up to a correctly exposed image.

There are various filters and effects like fisheye, miniaturization, pinhole camera, sepia, black & white, etc. Also, a face detection and dynamic optimization are included, but both are now normal in this class.
A small flash is built, thanks to an accessory shoe; it can also be retrofitted with an external flash. Canon PowerShot SX40 HS operated with a proprietary lithium-ion battery.
